Are Anti-Fog Lenses Actually Useful?
As soon as winter arrives, glasses wearers are plagued by foggy lenses. Just breathing while wearing a mask is enough to fog them up. When you go from outdoors to indoors, the lenses instantly turn white, and taking a sip of hot tea or eating hot pot immediately blurs your vision. Many consumers look for anti-fog capabilities in their lenses, and there are indeed some manufacturers on the market that still produce anti-fog lenses. Today, let's talk about whether anti-fog lenses are actually useful and if they are worth buying.
The Underlying Principle and Its Hidden Contradiction
Currently, most anti-fog lenses on the market rely on hydrophilic coatings. By applying a hydrophilic film to the surface, the lens forces condensing water droplets to rapidly spread out into a uniform, transparent layer of water. This allows light to pass through normally, preventing the lens from fogging up.
However, herein lies a contradiction that retailers will never tell you:
The standard high-end lenses we typically buy feature a hydrophobic coating on the surface (such as the Zeiss LotuTec coating). This technology causes water to bead up and roll off, making the lenses stain-resistant, water-resistant, and easy to clean.
Conversely, anti-fog coatings are hydrophilic, designed to spread water into a flat film. The chemical principles of these two coatings are entirely opposed. If you have an anti-fog coating, you cannot have a water-repellent coating, and vice versa. You simply cannot have your cake and eat it too.
This directly leads to the first drawback of anti-fog lenses: they get dirty very easily. Their hydrophilic surface naturally attracts oil, sweat, and fingerprints—every touch leaves a mark—so they need to be cleaned much more frequently than regular lenses.
Major Drawbacks: Why Anti-Fog Lenses Never Became Mainstream
Anti-fog lenses suffer from several notable shortcomings, which is why they have failed to become mainstream products:
1. Poor Hardness and Scratch Resistance: The durability is severely lacking. Many wearers find their anti-fog lenses heavily scratched after just six months of use.
2. Inferior Protective Properties: The performance of the lens coating in resisting dust, water, and oil is very poor, making them difficult to clean and maintain. Their light transmittance is also subpar. To put it into perspective, a past Essilor anti-fog lens priced around 1,000 RMB performed worse in these categories than a standard domestic Chinese lens costing around 200 RMB.
3. Overpriced with Limited Options: They are roughly twice as expensive as regular lenses. Currently, they are mostly produced by small domestic manufacturers; major brands have largely abandoned the anti-fog series.

The Reality of Lifespan: A Limited "Expiration Date"
Based on industry testing and feedback from actual wearers:
Affordable Anti-Fog Lenses:
These use a single-layer hydrophilic spray process. Under normal daily wear and with daily cleaning, the effective anti-fog period is typically only 2–3 months. Frequent exposure to sweat and oil, or dry wiping with tissues or the corner of a shirt, causes the coating to wear away more than three times faster than on ordinary lenses, and the effectiveness may decline significantly in just over a month.
High-End Composite Coated Anti-Fog Lenses:
These use a multi-layer film bonding process with stronger adhesion. Under ideal maintenance conditions, they can last 6 to 12 months, but they come at a significantly higher price tag.
In other words, if you use anti-fog lenses in the winter, there's a good chance that by the time you take them out again the following winter, their anti-fog properties will have all but disappeared, leaving you with a pair of ordinary lenses that aren’t even stain-resistant.
Many people feel they've been "tricked," and the root cause lies here: manufacturers only mention "anti-fog" without specifying the "expiration date." Consumers assume they've purchased a permanent feature, when in fact they've only bought a few months of effectiveness.
Fun Fact: Fog-Revealed Logos vs. Anti-Fog Lenses
You might notice a fun piece of trivia: many lenses reveal a brand logo when you breathe on them, known as a fog-revealed anti-counterfeiting mark. The principle behind this actually shares the exact same logic as anti-fog technology.
Using lasers or chemical etching, manufacturers selectively destroy a local area of the hydrophobic coating to alter its surface energy. When you breathe on the lens, the intact coating fogs up and turns white, while the destroyed area stays clear, revealing the logo.
While this process itself is fine—reputable brands place these marks on the outer edges of the lens outside the optical zone to avoid interfering with vision—you should watch out for two things:
1. Low-end factories use crude techniques. Etching too deeply creates a permanent defect on the coating, which accelerates the peeling of the surrounding film.
2. Anti-fog lenses themselves are hydrophilic, making fog-revealed marks harder and riskier to apply. On many cheap anti-fog lenses, the fog-revealed logo zone is the very first place where the coating fails.
Better Alternatives
If you can accept that anti-fog lenses are prone to smudges, have poor scratch resistance, and a short lifespan, you can still opt for them. There’s also a more cost-effective alternative: good-quality standard lenses plus a bottle of high-quality anti-fog spray. Just spray it on when needed, wipe it off, and it’ll last a day or two—a few dozen yuan will last you the entire winter. Alternatively, you can apply soapy water to the lenses; this will also work for a day without affecting the lenses’ inherent stain-resistant and scratch-resistant properties.
