What Are PC Lenses? Properties and Maintenance of PC Lenses
I. What Are PC Lenses?
PC lenses, also known as "space lenses" or "cosmic lenses," have the chemical name Polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic material which was first widely used in astronauts' visors, aircraft windshields, and bulletproof glass. Due to its exceptional impact resistance, it was later introduced to the eyewear industry and is now widely recognized as one of the safest lens materials available.
II. Core Properties of PC Lenses
PC lenses have very distinct pros and cons, which can be encapsulated as: 'extremely safe and lightweight, but with a modest compromise in optical clarity.
Pros:
1. Impact Resistance: PC lenses possess exceptional toughness and are shatter-resistant (2 cm thickness can be used in bulletproof glass), hence they are also called safety lenses. Its impact resistance is more than ten times that of ordinary resin lenses and hundreds of times that of glass lenses.
2. Ultra-Lightweight and Ultra-Thin: PC material has a very low density (approximately 1.20 g/cm³) and a refractive index of 1.59. This means that not only are these lenses thinner than standard resin lenses, but they are also about 30% lighter, resulting in virtually no pressure on the bridge of the nose.
3. Built-in 100% UV Protection: The PC substrate naturally blocks 100% of UVA and UVB rays (meeting the UV400 standard), eliminating the need for additional soaking in UV-blocking solutions, unlike ordinary resins.
4. Good Antioxidant Properties: PC lenses generally do not yellow for 3–5 years.
5. Environmentally Friendly: The material is environmentally friendly and recyclable.
Cons:
1. Relatively Soft Materials: Although a hardening coating is applied to the surface at the factory, its inherent scratch resistance is still inferior to that of resin and glass.
2. Low Abbe Number: Its Abbe number (dispersion coefficient) is only around 30. As shown in the chart above, compared to traditional materials with an Abbe number as high as 59, PC lenses exhibit more noticeable dispersion, and some people with sensitive eyes may see a slight rainbow-colored halo around the edges of the lenses.
3. Poor Chemical Resistance: PC material is highly sensitive to certain organic solvents (such as alcohol, perfume, and some cleaning agents), and contact with these substances can easily cause the lenses to crack or delaminate.

III. Maintenance of PC Lenses
Because PC lenses are sensitive to scratches, heat, and alcohol, they require more meticulous care than ordinary resin lenses. Proper maintenance can significantly extend their lifespan.
1. Strictly Prohibit "Dry Wiping"
- The Wrong Way: Wiping dust off the lenses directly with your clothes, tissues, or an eyeglass cloth while they are dry.

The Right Way: Always rinse first, clean second, and pat dry last.
- First, rinse the lenses with cold water to wash away hard dust and particles on the surface.
- Put a drop of neutral dish soap on your fingertips and gently rub the surface of the lenses.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Use a clean, dedicated microfiber cloth (or a soft tissue) to pat vertically and absorb the water. Avoid rubbing back and forth with force.
2. Keep Away from Organic Solvents (Never Use Alcohol)
- The Wrong Way: Using rubbing alcohol, anti-fog sprays, or high-concentration detergents to wipe your glasses.
- The Consequence: Alcohol damages the hard coating and anti-reflective coating on the surface of PC lenses. It can even trigger an "internal stress release" within the polycarbonate material itself, causing a dense network of tiny cracks on the lens surface (known in the industry as "crazing" or "delamination"), rendering the lenses completely useless.
- The Right Way: Stick to cold water and dish soap, or purchase lens cleaners explicitly labeled as "Safe for PC Lenses."
3. Avoid High-Temperature Environments
- The Wrong Way: Leaving your glasses on a car dashboard under the baking summer sun, wearing them into saunas or hot springs, or washing them with hot water.
- The Consequence: Polycarbonate and its optical surface coatings have vastly different coefficients of thermal expansion. High temperatures (above 60°C / 140°F) can deform the lens material, causing the coating layers to crack or peel, resulting in blurry vision.
4. Storage and Handling Habits
- Use Both Hands: Always put on and take off your glasses using both hands. Pulling them off with one hand can easily warp the frame, creating torsional stress on the highly resilient PC lenses, which can degrade optical performance over time.
- Lenses Facing Up: When setting your glasses down temporarily, always place them with the convex (front) side facing up. When storing them in a case, it is recommended to wrap them in an eyeglass cloth.
