What is a TAC Film?

TAC Film stands for Tri-Acetate Cellulose Film. Made from high-purity cellulose (high-quality cotton linters and refined wood pulp) through an acetylation reaction to form triacetate cellulose resin, it is an optical-grade transparent film processed using specialized techniques. Its composition is highly complex, incorporating plasticizers, co-solvents, wetting agents, lubricants, UV absorbers, and other additives. This formulation enables the film to effectively withstand mechanical cutting, baking, thermoforming (heat bending), and die-cutting, ensuring exceptional durability even in harsh environments. Cast via a precision solvent-casting (solution-casting) process, TAC remains one of the polymer materials with the highest light transmittance to this day. With a light transmittance exceeding 93% and extremely low haze, TAC film hardly blocks or scatters light. Furthermore, it possesses extremely low birefringence, with in-plane retardation (Re) controllable within 5 nm, preventing any distortion of polarized light. Because of these unique properties, TAC film continues to play a vital and active role in the field of optical materials.

Pros of TAC Polarized Lenses

1. Ultra-Lightweight‌: With a thickness of just 0.7–1.1 mm, they exert almost no pressure on the bridge of the nose, making them comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

2. Effective Glare & UV Protection: The multi-layer structure features a core polarized film that cuts horizontal glare from water, wet roads, and snow while blocking 100% of UVA and UVB rays.

3. Cost-Effective:‌ It's affordable and suitable for everyday driving and wear; with low production costs, it's the material of choice for the vast majority of mid- to low-end polarized sunglasses on the market.

4. Eco-Friendly Base Material: TAC is derived from cellulose (natural plant polymers like wood pulp or cotton), making it more biodegradable than many pure synthetic plastics.

Cons of TAC Polarized Lenses

1. Low Surface Hardness: Lenses are prone to scratches, so a scratch-resistant coating is typically applied to the lens surface to improve durability.

2. Risk of Delamination: Because the lens is made of laminated layers glued together, exposure to extreme heat, sweat, or high humidity (such as leaving them on a hot car dashboard) can cause the layers to peel or bubble over time.

3. Lower Impact Resistance: TAC lenses are brittle compared to materials like polycarbonate or Trivex. They do not offer high-velocity impact protection, making them unsuitable for safety glasses or high-impact sports.

4. Average Optical Clarity: Optical clarity is slightly inferior to that of resin and nylon materials, and prolonged wear may cause eye strain.
